Our Story and Calling
Every movement at Hikola Christian Movement begins with a breath inspired by both faith and culture. Our founder, Djenane Lopes Cortez, received a life-changing prophetic word six years ago at a joyful seminary graduation gathering. This message spoke of a future where her love for teaching, her deep education, and her precious Brazilian and Yanomami heritage would bloom into a ministry dedicated to service and holistic healing. As Djenane continued her journey - not always on easy paths - she listened closely to God. There were valleys that asked for patience, mountain tops that brought unexpected wisdom, and many moments when the Holy Spirit provided gentle direction. The vision for HCM first sparked during a holiday meal shared with her fellow Sunday School teachers, surrounded by the love of friends, a taste of home, and the presence of God. From that moment, a dream took root: to create a movement honoring breath as a sacred connection to the Creator, blending Christian worship with mindful movement in a space that welcomes every background. Today, the heartbeat of HCM is this calling - to guide children, adults, youth, and veterans in finding wholeness and spiritual connection through Jesus-centered yoga and prayerful breathwork. The story of HCM is really a story of listening to God's invitation, honoring both faith and culture, and pouring out that love through every class, workshop, and act of community care. Our imagery reflects this spiritual journey: vibrant patterns, rainforests, crosses, and scenes of togetherness remind us all that every breath can draw us closer to God and one another.
